Chit Chat

Brad's mom gave us a rock.

I could not stop laughing. It's one of those fake garden rocks that's flat on one side and hollow. She couldn't make it to the wedding so she gave our gift to H's parents to give to us. H opens the box, and yeah.  A rock.

He jokingly said it must be her revenge for us not sending her money to give to Brad. (She was the one who tried to "host" the anti-shower AKA money-grab, here

I remember when I was brand new here, there was a thread on bizarre wedding gifts but I couldn't really participate because I hadn't gotten any gifts yet, but I thought it was so funny and entertaining to read all the bizarre things knotties got.

So what's the weirdest gift you've gotten? Bonus points if you have a photo! (I'm just now regretting not taking a photo of the rock before I left for work) lol

The only other odd thing we got is what H refers to as The Blob. It's some kind of silver dish and I think it was meant to look like a natural stone or something, but it's very blob-ish and ugly. No idea what it's even meant to be used for. That was a fun thank-you note to write ;)

It was super nice and generous of our neighbor's to get us a wedding gift and all....but it's so ugly. I hate it. I don't know if it beats a fake rock or not.

We got a bunch of other rando gifts but none of them top this one for tackiness and re-gifting potential.

Bahaha I got almost the exact same frame! Except the phrase at the bottom of mine says, "Only the beginning" or something like that, so it's not nearly as bad as yours lol

pretty sure I saw one like that at BBB - maybe the same one.  Maybe you can return it :)

@kvruns They have may purchased it from Belk. When I googled the image online that was one of the links that came up. But honestly, I'm saving it for something special. My sister got kicked out of a wedding recently because she's pregnant and the baby is due a month before the wedding and according to the bride she "doesn't think she can perform her bridesmaids duties" so I might send her that frame.

that sounds like a good regift opportunity!

Oooh you said it was hollow, is it one of those hide-a-key rocks? Like, that you put in the front yard with other rocks, only this one has a spare key inside?

I don't know why I'm so excited at the thought that it is a hide-a-key rock LOL

LOL, this was my question, too!  Somehow, that makes it sort-of better...

I don't think so, it has a design on it. Almost like this: (but obviously ours is not a mom rock)

Or kind of like this, but it's gray like the first one and plastic-y looking, without the cute bee:

  • That's a winner right there
  • I don't have a picture but my mom's aunt gave us a naked man and lady statue that she made in ceramics class in 1979. Its ugly and currently in the closet.
  • MIL got us wind chimes and booze bottle lamp.  One of my coworkers yesterday said, "Oh, I got you something!" Which made me feel weird anyway because we aren't really close, and then she shoves a $20 in my hand and tells me to go buy a picture frame.  I tried to say, "No, really, I can't take this." But she insisted and scurried out of the room.  Soooo awkward and uncomfortable.  I'm going to use it to buy last day of school movie snacks for my students because that's the only way I can justify it in my head.

  • Oh and FMIL got us a corn hole set, which everyone thought was crazzzzzy but it was actually because we wanted to have one at the wedding.

I mean she still acted weirdly over-excited about it, but I did actually want one!image

  • I married my ex-h in 1980.  When he was with the ex before me, they had bought his mom's sewing machine for the ex for 50.00 - ex still owed the 50.00.  when our wedding came around, his gift to us was forgiving the 50.00 debt for the sewing machine his ex  had.

Ooh, I think I might know what the blob is.  I saw a thing of them at this fancy pants store and like they dig holes in the ground then pour in silver (or whatever metal it was).  They looked pretty cool, I thought anyways, but yeah definitely a particular taste, I guess.

  • @photokitty, They still have the tags on them, so I am looking forward to store credit at HomeGoods - maybe you will be lucky enough to find them in your store!

I actually wouldn't mind them if they weren't so knobby (besides that the teapot is extra useless), but they kind of scare me!

  • We got two stemless wine glasses engraved with the name of the store they were from "Total Wine". The person who gifted them even said they were a "free-be" in the card she gave us. She purchased us other things too and when I wrote the thank you note, I forgot to mention the free promotional wine glasses. She actually called me and left a message wanting to make sure that I received them. Honestly, I'd rather get nothing from you then some free promotional shit that you have the nerve to demand a gracious thank you for. They are in Goodwill's hands now.

    We got... this book.

Ha! I gave that book to my friend during her bachelorette party. I also included some massage oils and a candle as well.

That actually sounds really cool. Ours is not cool. I don't think it's actually silver because it's really light-weight so I feel like there is no cool story behind it.

I also feel like it was a total re-gift because it was crammed into a picture frame box.

Yeah this was a wedding gift rather than a bach party gift. They did also give us oils. I will say we do like the oils so although we made fun of the book some it wasn't really a bad gift in the end. But it was kind of hilarious to open.

I was gifted this gem at my shower this past weekend!

Oh god those are some of the ugliest things I've ever seen! Thank you for reminding me why I didn't have a shower.

  • I'm dying over these gifts. I also think the seafoam shell tea set is hideous. Like, it would not go with any other decoration in a room. You'd have to have a stark-white, plain kitchen for those to be appropriate statement pieces.

Anywho, boy am I glad I got nothing wacky for the wedding. My friend did gift me a pretty set of lingerie for my bachelorette, and DH thought it was ugly when I paraded out in it on our honeymoon. Oops!

The best part was that each piece was wrapped up in plain paper individually and shoved in random boxes - so I first took out an old clock radio box, and unwrapped the two little lids.  Then it was an led candle box containing the creamer and sugar bowl.  The tea pot was in a box from a set of highball glasses.  The whole mess took like 10 min to open and get back in the boxes to move on!

This thread should also serve as a PSA as to why it's always a good idea to register, even if you don't think you need anything.  Because, otherwise people will buy you rocks and seashell tea sets (although I'm sure people will still buy them despite there being a registry).

I haven't gotten anything really weird.  FI's stepmom likes to gift us décor stuff with "inspirational sayings" on it.... think wooden wall plaques and things of that nature.  Last Christmas was a set of plates on a wall rack.  His sister was gifted the exact same thing and liked it though.  Thankfully, my mom liked it and the words that were on it (talked about faith and family and crap like that), so it now hangs in her house.  But, my mom said "why would she give you that, it's totally not your style".  Mom knows me well.

Lol! I registered. At three stores, no less. With a pretty wide variety of price points. If anything, it encouraged people to buy things similar to, but not actually on our registry. I don't think registering or not does much to fix the rando gift issue. Some people are going to gift you what they want, registry or no. I will say, one of my most favorite gifts was off-registry....but some of my least favorite were off-registry too.

ETA: For some reason my eyes didn't read your last sentence, so basically, yeah, what you said. Except do what you want re: a registry. It doesn't really change what people will gift in my experience.

  • I need opinions on this other random gift.  It's a door knocker with "our" last name on it, although I'm not changing my name.  So say "our" last name is Laddy.  This is definitely wrong, right?
