The death of a motorcyclist in Victoria this afternoon has pushed the nation’s Anzac Day long weekend death toll to 11.
A crash between two motorbikes and a car in Kinglake left one male rider dead and another in hospital with serious injuries.
The deceased man, who is yet to be identified, lost control of his bike on a bend and was fatally struck by a car travelling in the opposite direction, police say.
The bike then swerved to hit the second motorcyclist.
In NSW, a man died early today in the Central Coast town of East Gosford, after his car crashed into a concrete barrier.
A 78-year-old man also died in the state’s central west after hitting an embankment near Canowindra about 11.30am.
The man was treated at the scene before being airlifted to Orange Base Hospital, where later died.
In Queensland, police found a body in a burnt out car in Kurwongbah about 5am. They believe the car caught alight after leaving Narangba Road, and have appealed for witnesses to assist with their investigation.
Yesterday afternoon, a four-year-old girl died after the car she was in hit a tree near the Victorian town of Ballarat. The car’s male driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Yesterday, five people died on New South Wales roads, including three young men from Orange whose four-wheel-drive crashed into a tree north-west of Dubbo about 7.40am.
Earlier, a 17-year-old woman died and her 15-year-old male passenger was airlifted to hospital after their car hit a tree off the Old Hume Highway near Mittagong.
A 44-year-old female pedestrian died in hospital after she was hit but a car about 12.40am in Cardiff, on the New South Wales south coast.
New South Wales police have urged drivers to slow down, after 1200 people were caught speeding across the state in a long weekend crackdown that began on Friday.
"Police will be out in force this weekend," Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said yesterday.
