OAK PARK, Ill. (WLS) -- A man trying to rush his wife to the hospital to have their baby wound up delivering the child himself, just off the Eisenhower Expressway at Austin Blvd.

The proud father Javier Sanchez rushed to follow the ambulance crew after the baby was born and medics arrived. They were taken to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, where the couple was initially headed.

The baby girl, Camila, was born around 3:40 a.m. Monday. The Chicago Fire Department said mom and baby are doing well.

This is the family's third child. Baby Camila has two older sisters. The parents thought they had enough time to drop those siblings off with a caretaker, but they were wrong.

"Labor is one of those amazing things in nature that one time it can take weeks, and the next time it can take 30 minutes. And this mom seems to have done everything right as a mom could do," said Dr. Donald Reese of West Suburban.

And 30 minutes is how long Mom was in labor. The baby girl arrived one day shy of her due date weighing a healthy eight pounds, one ounce.

"I try to make it to the hospital, but I can't. The baby is come out," Sanchez said. "I have my baby inside. I hold it. I call the paramedics. They come fast."

Emergency responders with the Chicago Fire Department clamped the umbilical cord on the scene.

Mom and baby are recovering and in good health, despite earlier concerns about the baby's temperature when she arrived.

"One of the largest concerns is the exposure to the elements. In this case, particularly here in Chicago in March, is the exposure to the cold and the potential for hypothermia for the baby," Reese said.

Doctors say mom did a great job keeping the baby warm in transit to the hospital.
