Mumford & Sons brought the first night of the Reading Festival to a close with a hit-packed set at Little John's Farm.

The neo folk-turned-rock quartet thrilled a packed field on Friday night (August 28) with a sublime mixture of their all-time classics and heavier new cuts.

Coming on stage to the strains of new track 'Snake Eyes', frontman Marcus Mumford seemed quite keen on creating a raucous atmosphere.

"It's f**king good to be back at Reading," he bellowed, adding: "We came here for a party!'

The one-two punch of live favourites 'I Will Wait' and 'Little Lion Man' soon had the crowd swaying and singing along with Marcus.

"When we finished our third record there was one place in the world we wanted to play more than any other and that was here for you fine people," he declared in between the two hits.

The singer also announced that the band are going out on tour in December during the set. Dates include two shows at London's O2 arena.

As Mumford & Sons neared the end of the show, Marcus got so involved that he crowd-surfed during 'Ditmas', before the fireworks came out for 'Dust Bowl Dance'.

This was Mumford & Sons' return to Reading and Leeds, having last performed on the Radio 1 stage back in 2010.

Tomorrow night, Mumford & Sons head to the Leeds stage along with Alt-J and Bastille, who thrilled Reading earlier tonight.

On the main Reading stage tomorrow night will be Metallica and Royal Blood, while Sunday will treat fans to headlining slots from The Libertines and Kendrick Lamar.
