Update: CSG voted on a proposal to support the University’s divestment from four companies allegedly facilitating the violation of Palestinian human rights. The resolution failed to pass with 25 members opposed, 15 in favor and no abstentions.
A few hours before Central Student Government is set to consider a divestment resolution during their weekly meeting, members of the campus group Students Allied for Freedom and Equality hung a banner from a window in Mason Hall, which read “The Deaths of These Children” and included a list of names.
The list names children who have allegedly died amid the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis. The banner says the deaths of these children were “sponsored by” companies such as the Boeing Company, Caterpillar Inc., G4S and United Technologies Corporation.
SAFE, a Palestinian solidarity group, posted a photo of the banner on social media Monday morning with the caption “commemorating the lives of innocent Palestinian Children #UMDivest.”
The banner appeared to have been taken down by Monday afternoon.
SAFE promotes the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions movement, which aims to mobilize institutions to divest from companies allegedly affiliated with the violation of Palestinian human rights.
During last week’s CSG meeting, SAFE presented a proposal asking the assembly to support an evaluation of the University’s investments in the four companies named on the banner. Divestment resolutions must be approved by the University’s Board of Regents, and the regents would need to appoint such a committee.
A similar resolution proposed in CSG last year failed to pass the assembly.
The resolution was heard in a CSG meeting last week and CSG will vote on its approval during tonight’s CSG meeting.
SAFE and Wolverines for Peace, a University group lobbying against divestment, are both planning to gather in advance of tonight’s vote.
The CSG meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Michigan Union’s Rogel Ballroom.
