  • Wreck kills one in Wilson County on Highway 231 Sunday.

A Hermitage man was killed after his car went down an embankment and landed in a Wilson County creek Sunday night.

Joshua Mayfield, 28, was the driver of a 2008 Nissan Altima that crashed just before 10 p.m. on Highway 231, according to an accident report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Anton A. McCann, a passenger in the car, was injured.

The investigating trooper determined Mayfield was going too fast for conditions near Spring Creek Bridge, the report states.

Mayfield’s car apparently swerved, overcorrected and went off the left side of the roadway through a guardrail and went down a stone embankment into the creek. The vehicle landed on the driver side.

The extent of McCann’s injuries weren’t certain.

Both occupants of the car were wearing seat belts.

Alcohol is supected to be a factor and testing has been requested, according to the report.

Highway 231 was closed after the crash, but is open Monday morning.

The Tennessean will provide additional details as they become available.
