INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 26, 2015)– A 12-year-old boy died after being pulled from a northeast side pool Tuesday at an apartment complex.

The incident was reported around 6:30 p.m. at Chateau in the Woods Apartments, in the 4000 block of Monaco Drive near Kessler Boulevard East Drive and Allisonville Road.

A couple came home and saw the boy unconscious in the pool and called police.

CPR was performed and the child, who was transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. He was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m.

The pool is not manned by a lifeguard. The entry gate to the pool is routinely kept unlocked from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. during pool season. It is unclear what time the young boy entered the pool area or how long he had been in the water, which is approximately six feet deep.

According to the pool manager, the boy was very familiar with the pool but did not know how to swim.

The boy’s father was at work at the time of the incident and an older sister was nearby with friends.

Police, fire department and EMS officials remind all parents to speak with your children about pool and water safety. They say to never leave a child unsupervised around water, and when possible, enroll them in swim lessons.
