Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been rearrested on May 5th 2015.

In November 2009, Narges Mohammad, the award-winning human rights activist, was terminated from her position at the Iranian Engineering Inspection company, due to her membership in the Center for Human Rights Defenders.

Mohammadi was the deputy head of the Human Rights Defenders Center, an NGO providing pro-bono legal services in human rights cases. The center is currently outlawed by the Islamic Republic.

Mohammadi, a member of the National Peace Council, has also been banned from traveling abroad. Mohammadi’s husband, Taghi Rahmani, who had also been targeted with arrests and persecution by the Islamic Republic in recent years, has fled the country, but Mohammadi has reportedly decided to stay in Iran with her twins.

In May 2010, Narges Mohammadi was summoned to branch 4 of the Revolutionary Court for the charge of “Membership in the Center for Human Rights Defenders”. Following several meetings to defend [her case], she was released on a bail. However, several days later, security agents arrested her at her home.

Narges Mohammadi’s trial took place in July 2011.

In September 2011, Narges Mohammadi was sentenced to 11 years in prison by branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court. One of her crimes includes: “helping and supporting families of political prisoners”. She was officially charged with: “Gathering and colluding against national security”, “Membership in the Center for Human Rights Defenders”, and “Propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

The appellate court has confirmed the six-year jail sentence handed to Nargess Mohammadi, the deputy head of Iran’s Human Rights Defenders Center.

Narges Mohammadi had fallen severely ill while imprisoned and was transferred to the hospital on July 2, 2010. She was held in the hospital for several months due to a neurological disease.

She is severely ill  and  suffers from periodic muscle paralysis.
