5 things you need to know Monday
First post-Brexit Wimbledon gets underway
While the whole of Britain ponders what’s next, the sporting world turns its attention to the country’s most famous — and reliable — event: Wimbledon, which kicks off Monday. Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic are defending their titles. Djokovic is the first man to own all four majors at once since Rod Laver did so in 1969, while Williams hasn’t won a major title since hoisting trophy No. 21 at the All England Club here last year.
Hearing aims to sort out who will get share of Prince's estate
The procedures for determining who will inherit part of Prince’s estate will be the focus of a hearing scheduled before Carver County District Judge Kevin Eide in a Minneapolis suburb Monday. The estate could be worth up to $300 million, and several people have come forward claiming to be heirs. With no known children, Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, and at least five half-siblings could share in the deceased pop singer's fortune.
U.K. Parliament to meet after 'Brexit' vote
The U.K.’s Parliament will meet Monday for the first time since last week’s surprise vote on "Brexit" — a British exit from the EU. No clear candidate has emerged to replace Prime Minister David Cameron, who announced he will resign by October following the referendum result. Finance Minister George Osborne attempted to allay the fears that roiled global markets over the outcome. The nation voted to leave the European Union by a margin of 52% to 48% in Thursday’s referendum.
Pediatricians urged to screen for suicide risks
As suicide becomes the second leading cause of death among teens, the American Academy of Pediatrics urges family doctors to screen patients for risks in a report published Monday. The updated report, which replaces a 2007 version, highlights risk factors linked to adolescent suicide attempts, and provides guidelines on how to identify and help teens at risk. The new version adds bullying and pathological Internet use as key influences when combined with other stresses. But Internet use isn’t all bad. It has become a major way teens get their support and communicate with family and mentors, the author of the report says.
Battle of the underdogs in College World Series begins
The College World Series championship comes down to two teams that were not expected to even make it to Omaha, let alone the finals. Coastal Carolina and Arizona had to go through demanding regionals and super regionals on the road to make the CWS, and each had to come back from an early loss here to win three straight in bracket play and reach the best-of-three finals starting Monday night. The Chanticleers have made it this far in their first CWS appearance. The Wildcats didn't even make the national tournament the previous three years after winning the national championship in 2012.
