Kit helps children hunt new antibiotics

Designer and entrepreneur Vidhi Mehta has developed a biology kit that works with an app, to help children become ''citizen scientists''.

It allows them to crowdsource their investigations, as they hunt for materials with antibiotic properties.

All kinds of material in nature can have this power, from honey to turmeric, to butterfly wings. Children search their natural environment, then test samples in a petri dish, before uploading the findings.

The Project, external is aimed at schoolchildren around the globe, so they can help to build a global map of materials with antibiotic materials, that professional scientists can then investigate further.

Vidhi Mehta showed off the kit to BBC News at the Royal College of Art graduation show.
