Samsung's New Gaming Monitor Has A Cool Feature For Your Phone

This article is more than 8 years old.

Cords, wires, and cables are well-established enemies of all that is clean and technological and convenient. To have an excess of cords is to be living in some kind of mid-century nightmare, tangled in a nest of electric snakes and forever forgetting which one goes with which thing. To that end, Samsung is incorporating a wireless charging station into its new SE370 gaming monitor, letting you slap your phone down and keep it charged while you play League of Legends. The monitor will support both PC and Mac.

The charging station is based of of the Qi wireless charging technology, so you'll need one an enabled phones to take advantage of it: as luck would have it, Samsung's Galaxy S6 fits the bill, as well as a range of other Android devices. iPhone is, of course, the one notable exception, though I imagine that Apple will be announcing wireless charging once the Android users have spent some time populating the world with stations. The monitor is a great idea, at least for me: I have a feeling that I'm not alone in my habit of plunking my phone next to my computer so I can text/play Clash of Clans while I work, and I spend enough time at that station to make it one of my phone's most frequent homes, as well as my bedside table.

This is the sort of announcement I think we'll be seeing a lot more of in the next year or two. You may remember IKEA, which recently started shipping a range of furniture with built-in Qi charging stations. Starbucks also has free wireless charging at some locations, though you'll need to fork over certain elements of your personal data to use it.

Samsung's SE370 comes in 23.6 and 23.7 inch screens, with 1920 X 1080 resolution and support for AMD Freesync. Samsung also advertises modes that reduce the intensity of aggressive blues in the screen to minimize eye strain and a 4 ms response time for games. It would be worth taking a look at if you've got a phone that can charge wirelessly, though one supposes you can simulate the experience by picking up one of those IKEA mats and just putting it next to your computer. This, however, would introduce more discrete units of electronics into your life, another well-established enemy of progress.
