House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said she was so upset with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to Congress Tuesday that she was “near tears” throughout its duration.
The California Democrat put out a press release that said “I was near tears throughout the Prime Minister’s speech — saddened by the insult to the intelligence of the United States as part of the P5 +1 nations, and saddened by the condescension toward our knowledge of the threat posed by Iran and our broader commitment to preventing nuclear proliferation.”
President Obama was more subdued in his response to the speech: “As far as I can tell, there was nothing new.”
While Mr. Netanyahu did give Mr. Obama credit for helping Israel in times of need since becoming commander in chief, he also said that the nuclear deal the White House is trying to offer Iran “paves Iran’s path to the bomb.”
“I know that my speech has been the subject of much controversy,” Mr. Netanyahu said. “I deeply regret that some perceive my being here as political. That was never my intention.”
