Everyone loves Jennifer Lawrence because she's straight-up awesome. Well, she's about to direct a movie that will hopefully reflect said awesomeness.
Like many actors, the Oscar-winner tells Entertainment Weekly that she's long held aspirations to direct and luckily for her (and us), Lawrence revealed she has signed on to direct a movie called "Project Delirium."
"It’s based on this article about mental warfare in the ’60s, like an acid experiment gone terribly wrong," she told EW. "It’s funny, I’ve wanted to direct since I was 16 and always thought I should start making steps towards that. If I had tried to do it earlier, I wouldn’t have been ready. Now I actually feel ready.”
The film appears to be based on the 2012 New Yorker article, Operation Delirium, which detailed how military doctors secretly tested the effects of nerve gas and LSD on American soldiers during the Cold War -- and should not be confused with Project Delirium, the 20-month FBI investigation that resulted in nearly 2,000 arrests on drug trafficking charges in 2011.
Lawrence's first shot at directing is coming at a time when the conversation surrounding the necessity to hire more female directors on major projects has become much louder than in previous years. According to a study released earlier this year from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, women accounted for 13 percent of directors on the top 700 films of 2014, and only accounted for 7 percent of directors attached to the 250 top-grossing films.
In many ways Lawrence is leading the charge for change in Hollywood, having spoken out about the wage gap between men and women in the film industry and scoring a $20 million payday for "Passengers." Additionally, the 25-year-old is keeping busy generating more Oscar buzz for her role in the upcoming movie "Joy," and has us wishing she and Amy Schumer would hurry up and finish the script they are writing together.
