An attorney with knowledge of Prince’s death investigation said the music icon was scheduled to meet with a California addition doctor the day after his death, according to a published report Tuesday.

William Mauzy, a Minneapolis attorney working with Dr. Howard Kornfeld, told the Star-Tribune that Kornfeld was contacted by Prince’s representatives the night before Prince died. The reps reportedly told the doctor that Prince “was dealing with a grave medical emergency.”

Kornfeld runs Recovery Without Walls in Mill Valley Calif. and is renowned for his opioid addition treatments. The newspaper reported that he couldn’t clear his schedule to see Prince until April 22.

Howard Kornfeld sent his son Andrew Kornfeld instead, in hopes to explain to Prince about the treatment. Mauzy said that Andrew Kornfeld was going to try and persuade Prince to go into treatment in California and even took a red-eye flight from San Francisco the night Prince’s people called.

Mauzy told the Star-Tribune that when Andrew Kornfeld arrived at the Paisley Park compound at 9:30 a.m. on April 21, Prince’s representatives couldn’t find him. Andrew Kornfeld was one of three people who were with Prince’s body and called emergency dispatchers they were at Prince’s home.

Prince was found alone, unresponsive in the elevator of his home. His death has mostly been shrouded in mystery, but sources have told the Star-Tribune that his use of painkillers had become the focus of the investigation into his death.

The paper reported that Howard Kornfeld contacted a Twin Cities doctor to check on Prince after the icon’s representatives contacted Kornfeld. There was hope that Prince would then agree to go to the California facility and stay under Kornfeld’s care.

The doctor has become widely known for his support for using Suboxone to curb opioid cravings. Andrew Kornfeld had a drug on him to help opioid patients go through withdrawals. He was set to give Prince that drug, known as buprenorphine.

Mauzy told the paper that buprenorphine was never used on Prince.

Prince was 57 years old when he was found dead. Police have released little information surrounding his death and an investigation is ongoing. Though an autopsy was completed days after he died, the results have not been made public.

He had no known will.
