Renowned photographer and ICP faculty member Joan Liftin will discuss her extensive career in photography and photo editing. She’ll share work from her book Drive-ins, a look at the culture of American outdoor movies, and her new book, Marseille, which Artbook calls “a love letter from an American to France’s oldest and second largest city.”

Copies of Marseilles will be available for purchase. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Bio

Portfolios of Joan Liftin’s photographs have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Der Spiegel, Aperture, and Creative Photography. Her work is included in the collections of the Center for Creative Photography, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Princeton University, among others.

Her book Drive-ins, a look at the culture of American outdoor movies, was published in 2004. A noted educator, she was Chair of the Documentary Program at the International Center of Photography from 1989–2001 and also Director of the Magnum Photos library. Among the many books she has edited are Mary Ellen Mark’s Falkland Road, Charles Harbutt’s Departures and Arrivals, and Andrea Stern’s Inheritance. Recently, she has had one-woman shows in Oaxaca, Mexico, New York City, and Hollywood, and an exhibition of her new book, Marseille, is currently running in Rome. She is a recipient of a CAPs grant and a Peter S. Reed grant.
