CHENNAI: The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu on Thursday reelected chief minister J Jayalalithaa as party general secretary for the seventh term and vowed to ensure that she would continue as the CM after the assembly elections in the state in May 2016.
A resolution to this effect was adopted at the party's general council meeting at Thiruvanmiyur here. The general council adopted 14 resolutions.
The general council authorised Jayalalithaa to decide on electoral strategies. "2016 will blossom as AIADMK year under the leadership of Jayalalithaa," a resolution adopted at the meeting said.
Without naming party’s archrival – DMK – the general council said Jayalalithaa would destroy designs of evil forces. "Every cadre should keep a vigil over the evil forces which are attempting to capture power in Tamil Nadu for their selfishness and ensure that democracy is upheld in the state," another resolution said.
The party praised Jayalalithaa for giving speedy relief and rehabilitation to flood-affected people in Chennai and other parts of the state. The party urged the Centre to immediately sanction the flood relief amount sought by state government.
The general council urged central government to bring in an ordinance so that jallikattu (taming of the bull) could be held in the state during Pongal.
The general council paid tributes to 263 party cadres who lost their lives after Jayalalithaa was convicted in a disproportionate assets case in September last year
Another resolution adopted at the meeting urged the central government to hold talks with Sri Lanka to stop apprehension and torture of Indian fishermen.
