A 25-year old woman died from a suspected drug overdose at Saturday’s Stereosonic music festival in Sydney.
The woman, identified in the local press as Sylvia Choi, a pharmacist, died after reportedly taking a mixture of Ecstasy and MDMA.
Another woman, 22, is in an induced coma in hospital after attending the festival, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, while 69 others were charged with drug offenses.
The traveling fest is one of the biggest of its kind Down Under, with more than 50,000 revelers attending the date at Sydney Olympic Park, the first of five which visits each of Australia’s biggest cities.
Organizers have offered their sympathies to the family of the woman who died. “Totem Onelove conveys our deepest condolences to the friends and family of the patron who tragically passed away on Saturday night at Sydney Stereosonic,” reads a message posted on fest’s Facebook page. “We appeal to our audience that they stay safe and look out for each other.”
Police attribute the death to an overdose. “It’s been reported at this time a 25-year-old woman has lost her life and we believe is a direct result of a drug overdose,” assistant commissioner Frank Mennilli said. “We won’t know the full extent of the situation until an autopsy has been conducted and investigators are now preparing a brief for the coroner.”
Armin van Buuren, Major Lazer and Axwell & Ingrosso are among the headliners on the traveling fest.
