Storage and office space has been a problem for Daviess County offices for over 15 years. Now, the county is set to purchase a vacant building to create more space.

That expansion will allow county offices to serve the public more efficiently

When you enter the main doors you can see a lot of open space, officials call it wasted space. Nothing can be done about this lobby area because the court house is under a national registry.

Over they years, they’ve built offices out of old closets and even bathrooms. Finding storage for all the legal documents is a challenge.

Some offices have already moved to houses across the street from the court house. A former two bedroom house off of Hefron Road now serves not just the Health Department, but also the County’s Septic and Environmental offices.

“We all share space and when you give a shot to a child and they are crying, the environmentalist next door is hearing the baby cry and trying to make a phone call or talk to his costumers,” said Daviess County Health Nurse, Kathy Sullender.”

The council has approved the purchase of the Old National Building just a few blocks south of the courthouse. The building cost 90-thousand dollars. The county was looking at putting up a new building on a lot they own across the street. Because that project was expected to cost a couple million dollars. That lot will now be a parking lot.

There is no time line for the project at this time.
