Cover & Excerpt

A Good Family Man
by Thianna Durston
Corbin’s Bend, Season Three, Book Eight

A Good Family ManJack Carmichael’s natural instinct is to take care of people. In his job as a U.S. Marshal, he has done that for 25 years. Unfortunately, being married to his job has left his love life in tatters. Now classified unfit for duty, he retires and comes home to Colorado to figure things out. Dominant and used to taking control like his brother Brent, he has never been interested in spanking. Until a cute Nurse Practitioner catches his attention.

Josh Martin feels lucky. He's not only accepted into Corbin's Bend, but he'll be working at the brand new Corbin's Bend Medical Clinic as its only Nurse Practitioner. At thirty-two, he figures this is his last-ditch attempt at finding a dominant partner who isn't abusive. He finds more than his share of dominant men in Corbin's Bend, not the least of which are the Carmichael brothers. Brent's dominance is both comforting and unnerving, Jack's turns him on.

Josh is unlike any submissive male Jack has encountered and when the younger man asks him out, he decides to give it a go. One day of fun turns into two, three...until Jack, with more failed relationships than he can count in his past and unsure he can be the head of house Josh needs, leaves, burying himself once again in work. Forced to see the error of his decision, he puts aside the worries that have plagued him for months and returns to Corbin’s Bend. To become the good family man he wants to be, he has to earn back Josh’s trust and truly take on a role he’s never considered before: head of a loving discipline household.

Excerpt:
Grabbing his phone, he hit speaker and quickly dialed Jaylee’s number.

“Miss us already?” his sister teased.

“Always. Hey, mind if I duck into your house and use the shower?”

“You’re in Denver? Sheila will be thrilled.”

“I’m, uh, here for a date,” he admitted, grinning at the squeal that crossed the line.

“Oh, Josh! Moving has been good for you. Who is he? What’s he like? Is he into that whole spanking thing you’re into? Wait, don’t answer. Hold on.” Her line went to mute music and he took the left that would take him to her house. By the time he reached her front door, she came back on. “Sorry about that. One of my co-workers. Now, spill,” she added in excitement.

“Is Sheila home?”

“No, in daycare.”

Using his key, he walked inside as he answered her questions. “His name’s Jack Carmichael and he’s actually the brother of the guy who created Corbin’s Bend. He helped me move in. And sis? Oh my god! He’s stunning. Taller and stronger than I am with dark blond hair and the most amazing gray-blue eyes. We just spent a couple hours at the DBC and had a blast. Then,” he added, hearing the excitement in his own voice, “he suddenly asked me to dinner tonight and out to Tracks.”

“Josh, all I can say is it’s about time! You’ve been on a dating cold spell since you started graduate school. Well, ever since that last jerk…” She trailed off but he knew who she was talking about. The thing was, she didn’t even know of the two jerks he’d been out with since.

“Well, Jack is all sorts of amazing, sis. And I’ll have to talk to you later ’cause I gotta take a shower and get ready.”

“The clothes you left are in the back of Sheila’s closet in a cardboard box. I think there’s some club duds in there.”

“Thanks, sis.”

“Please,” she said in a tone that told him she didn’t really want to ask. “Please tell me you’re all prepared to be safe?”

“I’m always safe, Jay. Always.” One of the things he already planned to do was to go to the store on the way to meet Jack to buy lube and condoms. Yeah, he was hopeful. He was a gay man going to Tracks. Surely that meant he would get laid…and by Jack Carmichael no less. Yum.

He took time in the shower, making sure he was buffed, shined, and that his pubes were brought under control. It had been long enough since he’d dated, that he had let them grow out, but he preferred to manscape. As he finished with the razor, he hoped Jack liked less hair as well.

Once he was dry, he went into Sheila’s room and pulled out the box in the back. It was packed full of stuff. He hadn’t realized he’d left so many clothes. Almost all of them were perfect for the club, which was why he hadn’t taken them to Corbin’s Bend. It was a great community but wasn’t really gay chic. Josh wanted his patients to respect him, not to think “Oh, wow, he looks different at work to how he looks at home.” Or even worse, for them to take one look at his skinny jeans and brightly colored shirts and to discount him as a fully qualified medical professional.

Halfway through the box, he was trying to decide between the red sequined or the bright yellow, when something caught his eye. Digging further in, he stopped himself from letting out a loud yell of joy. The shirt was almost the exact same color of Jack’s eyes. “Well, hello,” he murmured, shoving the other clothes back inside and taking the shirt out to Jaylee’s living room to iron. After making sure there were no wrinkles left, he put on the shirt and a pair of dark gray skinny jeans before adding a pair of cowboy boots. Leaving a huge thank you note for his sister, he packed the box into the back of his car. If he and Jack were lucky enough to go out again, he wanted to have his clothes ready and available.

The drive took him forty minutes with the evening rush traffic but he luckily found a parking spot a block from Phil’s Place, putting him halfway between the restaurant and Tracks. Spotting Jack standing outside his truck leaning against the passenger side door, he couldn’t fault the men and women who walked past taking second, third, and fourth looks. Hell, the man was
good looking as it was, but with what he was wearing, he should be illegal. He looked like one of those sexy cowboy posters dressed in dark black jeans with a dark red button down shirt and a cowboy hat perched on top of his head. No, he couldn’t fault them, but he could show them who Jack was with.

Hopping out of his car and locking it, he quickly strode forward just as three women who looked to be headed toward Phil’s paused and stalked toward Jack. “I’m here!” he called to get his date’s notice. As Jack turned to look at him, a wonderfully feral smile that was also somehow warm crossed the man’s face and he straightened up and took a step toward him. Instantly all three women pouted, though none of them walked away yet.

Josh paused as Jack’s eyes travelled down his body, his feral smile increasing. A whooshing filled his ears as his heartbeat took off and at this moment, Josh hoped the man would devour him then and there. Fuck Phil’s. He had lube.
