FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) – The Ferguson mayor’s days on the job may be numbered now that a group has collected hundreds of signatures aimed at a recall.

The group that started the push to recall Mayor James Knowles is called “Ground Level Support.”

A recall requires signatures from about 1,800 of the people who voted in the last mayoral election. The group said it had about 2,200.

FOX 2’s Anthony Kiekow spoke with one council member who said the city has made a lot of positive changes, so he doesn’t understand why people are signing the petition.

“I don’t know what will satisfy them,” Councilman Brian Fletcher said. “We’ve been through enough.”

Members of “Ground Level Support” said Mayor Knowles needs to be held accountable for the troubling findings in the Department of Justice report. They said recent changes to make city leadership more diverse and to root out discrimination are steps in the right direction. However, they said more needs to be done.

“I don’t think it is enough,” Alicia Stereet said. “It is only a cover up and the change that needs to happen is that the mayor needs to be out of office.”

The mayor has declined to comment on the issue all week.

If the signatures are certified by the board of elections, the city would have to pay for a recall election within 30 days.
