Finished size

17″ x 42″ before blocking

20″ x 47″ after blocking

Materials

Gauge

In stitch pattern, 22 sts for 7 rows measures 4″.

Due to the stitch pattern, it would be easier to match gauge by measuring the complete project width after a few rows instead of trying to measure four inches.

Skill Level

Intermediate. The stitch pattern is a bit out of the ordinary and working with the finer thread can be more of a challenge. Try out the stitch pattern with practice yarn in a heavier weight to ensure success.

Pattern Note

This project is called a “Fling” because it’s something that you can just fling on, pin at the shoulder and go. Please stay tuned for more Flings. So fun!

The multiple of this stitch pattern is “12+16”. Add or subtract any multiple of 12 to the initial stitch count to increase or decrease the width.

Special Stitches

Shell (sh): [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] in stitch indicated.

Instructions

Row 1: Ch 112, sk 3 ch (counts as dc here and throughout), 2 dc in next ch, *ch 3, sk 5 ch, sc in next ch, ch 3, sk 5 ch, sh in next ch, rep from * seven times more, ch 3, sk 5 ch, sc in next ch, ch 3, sk 5 ch, 3 dc in last ch, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, *ch 3, sk ch-3 sp, sc in sc, ch 3, sk ch-3 sp, sh in ch-1 sp of sh, rep from * seven times more, ch 3, sk ch-3 sp, sc in sc, ch 3, sk ch-3 sp, 3 dc in last dc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, *ch 6, sk 1 ch, sc in each of next 5 ch, turn (see note below), ch 1, sc in each of 5 sc, turn, ch 1, sc in each of 5 sc, returning to current row, sk ch-3 sp, sc in sc of that current row, turn, ch 1, sc in each of 5 sc, turn, sk ch-3 sp of current row,** sh in ch-1 sp of sh, rep from * seven times more (ignore the ** when making the full repeats), rep from * once more, stopping at **, 3 dc in last dc, turn.

Note: After making the chain 6, you will be making a little 4-row section of 5 single crochets. The instructions will indicate to turn after each row of this little section. You won’t need to turn the entire project. You’ll just turn this little section. After the third row of this little section, you are joining with a single crochet into row 2, then you go back to the little section and complete the fourth row. After turning once more, you go back again to row 2 and make the shell in the middle of the shell. The little section will bend over after this row but will be corrected during row 4.

Row 4: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, *ch 3, sc in top corner of little 4-row sc section (it is actually the first sc of the first row of the little section), ch 3, sh in ch-1 of sh, rep from * seven times more, ch 3, sc in top corner of little 4-row sc section, ch 3, 3 dc in last dc, turn.

Rows 5-82: Rep rows 2-4 consecutively.

Row 83: Rep row 2 once more, fasten off.

Finishing

Blocking is recommended for all natural fibers. For this shawlette, I wet the project in lukewarm water completely and squeezed out some of the water gently. I rolled it in a dry towel to remove as much excess water as possible. I placed the project on another dry towel and shaped it then allowed to dry.

With yarn needle, weave in loose ends carefully.
