Barcelona collaborate with the Patrick O'Connell Memorial Fund

Barcelona are collaborating with the Patrick O’Connell Memorial Fund, an organisation whose main objective is to remember and honour an Irishman who coached Barça between 1935 and 1937.

The fund's aim is to raise awareness of a man who has largely been forgotten.

One of the projects is to build a memorial befitting Mr. O’Connell’s sporting achievements at St Mary’s Cemetery, Kensal Green, London, now that it has been discovered that he died in poverty in London and is buried beneath an unmarked tombstone.

There will be several events held over the coming months. Among them are an auction of shirts donated by football legends from across the globe, which will take place at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough home -- Mr. O'Connell played for Wednesday.

A Barcelona shirt signed by the whole of the first team will be up for auction.

Other players with a Barça past that have signed donated items include Johan Cruyff, Samuel Eto’o, Patrick Kluivert, Ronald Koeman, Frank Rijkaard and Gary Lineker

Mr. O'Connell is credited with saving Barcelona when they were in danger of going out of business due to financial problems.
