The Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets is a major doubt for the second leg of Barcelona’s last-16 tie against Manchester City after being carried off in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Villarreal in the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg.

The Spain midfielder was withdrawn in the 40th minute of the match at El Madrigal after going down under a challenge from Tomás Pina. The Villarreal player appeared to catch his ankle during the challenge, with Busquets eventually being replaced by defender Jérémy Mathieu.

“Sergio Busquets has a sprained right ankle syndesmosis,” read a statement on Barcelona’s website. “The player of FC Barcelona will undergo further tests on Thursday to know the exact extent of the injury, as reported by the Medical Services.”

Pina was later dismissed on 65 minutes for another bad tackle on Neymar. Barcelona lead City 2-1 after the first leg at the Etihad Stadium and face Real Madrid in the clásico four days later. They reached the Copa del Rey final 6-2 on aggregate
