Thairath blasted for calling LGBT ‘sexual deviants’

Thailand’s oldest newspaper is under fire for an offensive description of the LGBT community.

A popular online community was filled with complaints taking Thairath to task after it described the “Lou Queernaval,” a LGBT carnival recently held in in Nice, France, as a party for “sexual deviants.”

“Is this Thairath’s attempt to stir up hate or what?” wrote Trasher Bangkok, an international community of queer culture and media provocateurs, on Monday.  “They chose to describe carnival-goers with the term ‘sexual deviants.’ I don’t know if this is just a bad translation, or if it actually came from the writer’s twisted mind.”

The Thairath story was published in its edition sent out Monday.

“The carnival for sexual deviants was held in Nice last month,” it read. “There were many queers joining the event from lesbian to gay and bisexual people.”

Wow. If that wasn’t the intended message, they might consider clarifying and apologizing.
