San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was impressed with what he saw from teammate Colin Kaepernick after the star quarterback underwent offseason training in Phoenix.

Davis, who watched Kaepernick in a workout at Levi's Stadium, said that 49ers fans should be excited for the upcoming season because the 27-year-old looks like a different player from the quarterback who failed to lead his team to the playoffs last season.

"I didn't even know that was Colin," Davis said in jest. "No, seriously, he was working on his drop back and I was just, 'Who is that?' You guys are in for a treat. He looks like a totally different guy."

Kaepernick, who signed a six-year deal worth $126 million with the 49ers last year, failed to live up to expectations last season after his quarterback rating went down to 55.9 from 68.6 during the 2013 NFL season. He completed 60.5 percent of his passes for 3,369 yards with 19 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

In the hope of proving his doubters wrong, Kaepernick underwent offseason workout in Phoenix with trusted quarterback coach Dennis Gile along with two-time NFL Most Valuable Player Kurt Warner.

Davis praised his superstar teammate for showing determination to improve his game, which he thinks should serve as an inspiration to all of them in the team.

"I think it was really genuine and I think he's just a class guy," Davis said. "It shows that he's humble, for him to go to someone and work on his craft and get better. And it shows that his approach to this game, he's just relentless. He just wants to be great and I respect that. And that's another reason why I'm in this building today."

When asked by reporters why he decided to dedicate himself in offseason workouts, Kaepernick said that he just wanted to make sure he is doing anything possible to help his team become a strong Super Bowl contender next season. Aside from his mechanics, the Texas native also admitted that he is looking to improve his confidence.

"We didn't have the season we wanted to last year," Kaepernick said. "I could have played better last year; offensively, we should have played better last year. So, something had to change."

The 49ers finished third in the National Football Conference West last season with an 8-8 record.
