UFC Fight Night 88 pre-fight facts: Fireworks expected on this Memorial Day weekend

The UFC returns to Las Vegas tonight for its annual Memorial Day weekend showcase. And while it’s not a pay-per-view, the FOX Sports 1 event still features a strong lineup topped by a significant bantamweight headliner.

Rising 135-pound prospects Thomas Almeida (20-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) and Cody Garbrandt (8-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) will attempt to stay undefeated when they face off in the main event.

A number of other notable matchups fill the 12-bout card, which airs on FOX Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass at Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Almeida enters the event on a 20-fight winning streak. He hasn’t suffered a loss since his professional debut in November 2011.

Almeida’s 20-fight winning streak in MMA competition is the second longest among active UFC fighters behind Khabib Nurmagomedov (23).

Almeida’s four-fight UFC winning streak in bantamweight competition is tied for the second-longest active streak in the division behind Raphael Assuncao (seven).

Almeida has earned 19 of his 20 career victories by stoppage. He’s earned 16 of those finishes in the first round.

Almeida’s three knockout victories in UFC bantamweight competition are second most in divisional history behind T.J. Dillashaw (five).

Almeida’s three consecutive knockout victories in UFC/WEC bantamweight competition are tied with Dillashaw for the longest streak in divisional history.

Barao has lost two of his past three fights after going on a 33-fight unbeaten streak that lasted more than nine years.

Barao has earned five of his eight UFC victories by stoppage.

Barao’s seven stoppage victories in UFC/WEC bantamweight competition are tied with Urijah Faber for most in combined divisional history.

Barao is one of two fighters in UFC history to earn a knockout stemming from a spinning back kick to the head. He accomplished the feat against Eddie Wineland at UFC 165.

Barao is one of six fighters in UFC history to register two arm-triangle-choke submission victories.

Barao’s has defended 100 percent of all opponent takedown attempts in UFC competition, the highest rate in company history. He’s successful stopped a record 33 consecutive takedown attempts.

Jeremy Stephens (24-12 MMA, 11-11 UFC) is 4-3 since he dropped to the UFC featherweight division in May 2013.

Stephens is one of three fighters in UFC history to earn 11 victories and suffer 11 defeats inside the octagon. Tito Ortiz and Frank Mir are the others.

Stephens’ is one of three fighters in UFC featherweight history to earn a knockout victory stemming from a head kick. He accomplished the feat against Rony Jason at UFC Fight Night 32.

Rick Story (18-8 MMA, 11-6 UFC) returns to competition for the first time since Oct. 4, 2014. The 603-day layoff is the longest of his more than eight-year career.

Story enters the event on his first two-fight winning streak since 2009. He’d previously alternated wins and losses over eight UFC appearances.

Story has earned seven of his 11 UFC victories by decision. Oppositely, he has suffered seven of his eight career losses by decision.

Story’s six split-decision results in UFC competition are tied with Clay Guida for second most in history behind Gleison Tibau (seven).

Story is one of six fighters in UFC history to register two arm-triangle-choke submission victories.

Tarec Saffiedine (16-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is the only Belgian-born fighter to earn a UFC victory.

Saffiedine was the final welterweight champion in the history of the now-defunct Strikeforce organization. He won the belt from Nate Marquardt in January 2013.

Saffiedine has landed 209 leg kicks in UFC/Strikeforce welterweight competition, second most in combined divisional history behind Thiago Alves (239).

Camozzi’s 26-second knockout of Joe Riggs at UFC Fight Night 83 was the second fastest finish in UFC history stemming from knee strikes.

Vitor Miranda (12-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC), 37, is the oldest of the 24 fighters scheduled to compete at the event.

Miranda has earned 11 of his 12 career victories by stoppage.

Miranda has earned all three of his UFC victories by knockout.

Miranda’s three-fight knockout streak in UFC competition is tied with Derek Brunson, Stipe Miocic, Derrick Lewis, and Almeida for the second longest among active fighters in the company behind Mairbek Taisumov (four).

Jorge Masvidal (29-10 MMA, 6-3 UFC) is 1-1 since he moved up to the welterweight division in July.

Masvidal has earned four of his six UFC victories by decision. Twelve of his past 14 fights have ended in a decision.

Masvidal has landed a greater number of significant strikes than his opponent in 10 of his past 12 fights to end in a decision.

Masvidal is one of four fighters in UFC history to finish a bout by submission at the 4:59 mark of Round 2. He accomplished the feat against Michael Chiesa at UFC on FOX 8.

Lorenz Larkin (16-5 MMA, 3-5 UFC) is 2-1 since he dropped to the UFC welterweight division in January 2015.

Larkin has earned both of his UFC welterweight victories by knockout.

Josh Burkman (28-12 MMA, 6-7 UFC) was successful in his UFC lightweight debut at UFC Fight Night 82 in February.

Burkman enters the event off a UFC victory for the first time since January 2008.

Burkman is one of eight fighters in UFC history to earn a knockout stemming from a slam. He accomplished the feat against Sam Morgan at the TUF 2 Finale.

Abel Trujillo (14-6 MMA, 5-2 UFC) has earned four of his five UFC victories by stoppage.

Trujillo was taken down a UFC record 21 times in his unanimous-decision loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 160.

Erik Koch (13-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) returns to competition for the first time since May 10, 2014. The 750-day layoff is the longest of his more than nine-year career.

Koch enters the event with three losses in his past four fights.

Koch is 1-1 since he returned to the lightweight division in February 2014.

Aljamain Sterling’s (12-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) four-fight UFC winning streak in bantamweight competition is tied for the second longest active streak in the division behind Assuncao (seven).

Sterling has earned three of his four UFC victories by stoppage.

Bryan Caraway (20-7 MMA, 5-2 UFC) has earned 17 of his 20 career victories by submission. That includes four of his five UFC victories.

Caraway’s three submission victories in UFC bantamweight competition are tied for second most in divisional history behind Urijah Faber (six).

Caraway has completed at least one takedown against eight of his nine UFC/WEC opponents.
