Perfection: UFC's Paige VanZant gets perfect 30 on 'Dancing with the Stars,' remains in second

Seven weeks into the competition on Season 22 of “Dancing with the Stars,” UFC strawweight Paige VanZant was perfect.

Dancing a jive on “Icons Night” set to Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary,” VanZant and pro partner Mark Ballas set a new personal best with a perfect 30/30 – just the second perfect score of the season.

Earlier in the episode, “Good Morning America” meteorologist Ginger Zee and pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy also had a perfect 30 for their Viennese waltz.

VanZant’s perfect score put her temporarily into first place overall, but the remaining dancers still had to perform a second dance – a group routine. The group dance paired the female stars and their partners – Team Beyonce – against the male stars and their partners – Team James Brown.

The male stars’ dance picked up a 28/30 from the judges, but the female stars’ dance (watch below) left the judges slightly underwhelmed. The 25/30 – two 8s and a 9 – they received meant a three-point deficit for VanZant in that routine compared to Boyz II Men singer Wanya Morris and deaf model Nyle DiMarco. And that meant only a half-hour after she moved into first place past Morris, who scored a 27 in his individual routine, VanZant was back into second place, just two points behind him.

Overall, Morris still leads with 204 points. But VanZant and DiMarco are right behind with 202. Zee is in fourth place with 195. (Those scores do not take into account the numbers given by the two guest judges in Weeks 4 and 5.)

One big change from Week 6, though, was that VanZant didn’t have to sweat out the final moments of the live show. On the double-elimination episode, Morris was listed in jeopardy despite having the top overall score, as were actress Kim Fields and reigning Super Bowl MVP Von Miller. Miller and Fields were eliminated, leaving the competition with six couples heading into next week’s quarterfinals.

From a judges’ scores perspective, the eliminations have mostly played out the way they should have on paper. Contestants advance on the show based on their scores with the judges as well as fan votes. Each week, the dancer with the lowest combined score of the judges’ tallies and the fans’ votes is eliminated – but next week, there will be a double elimination.

Going into the season, VanZant was the betting favorite to win the show at Bovada, which had the 22-year-old at 2-1 to win the long-running ABC dancing competition.

VanZant (6-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) most recently fought in December, when she suffered a submission loss to Rose Namajunas. It halted a three-fight winning streak that had moved the heavily promoted fighter up the 115-pound ranks. “Dancing with the Stars” runs through May, which means VanZant is unlikely to be booked for a fight until her time on the show is over. However, July’s big UFC 200 event would still be in the running for her next fight.
