People from Manchester think the Angel of the North is the most overrated in the country.

A total of 20 per cent of people from in and around Manchester chose the giant sculpture near Newcastle as the most overrated in the country, according to a new survey.

This was the highest of any of the landmarks in the list, which included Loch Ness, the Eden Project and Hadrian’s Wall.

However half the people surveyed would not have said any of the places listed were overrated.

On the other hand, Mancunians are most likely to say that the Lake District doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Some 14 per cent of people selected the national park as Britain’s most underrated landmark. The closest landmark to Manchester in the survey, conducted for holidaycottages.co.uk, is the Peak District.

But the Lake District was actually more popular with Mancunians. Some 80 per cent of people said they had gone there, compared with 69 per cent for the Peak District.

Other popular places to go include Snowdonia and the Yorkshire Dales.

Overall the UK said that Stonehenge is the most overrated landmark. A total of 396 people out of 2,000 chose it as the most underwhelming of the lot.
