Manchester’s Scott Thomas and his lady Kady McDermott came in third place on Love Island 2016 despite winning viewers' hearts with their declarations of love.

The Love Island lovebirds missed out on the £50,000 cash prize on the ITV2 dating show to winners Nathan Massey and Cara De La Hoyde and Alex Bowen and Olivia Buckland in second place.

Club promoter and entrepreneur Scott and his feisty ‘pocket rocket’ Kady went through many ups and downs in the villa, and were cheered on in the final by celeb supporters including former The Only Way Is Essex star Mark Wright who cheered "come on @scottyspecial."

They almost ended their coupling early in the series after Kady’s head was tured by newcomer James Khan. And in revenge Scott went on a date with new girl Tina Stinnes.

But they found their way back into each other’s arms and Scott later sealed their romance by asking Kady to become his girlfriend, spelling it out with towels around the pool - an event that host Caroline Flack called her "moment of this series."

Kady later tweeted: "May not have won the competition but I won @scottyspecial's heart. And that is winning in its own right."

Love Island 2016 reached its climactic final as the Islanders celebrated the end of the series with the Love Island Summer Ball, which gave the couples a chance to declare their true feelings to their other halves.

While the girls went on a shopping trip to pick their dresses for the ball, the boys were given dancing lessons to help them impress their partners.

Kady told Scott: “I think it’s clear that the whole nation knows we’ve had a massive rollercoaster relationship, but I honestly wouldn’t change it for the world.

“I have not one single regret, because everything that’s happened in the last six weeks has made us the strong couple that we are now.

“You’re gorgeous, funny, loud. I wouldn’t even swap you for Zayn Malik.

“I can’t wait for us to continue our journey on the outside together as boyfriend and girlfriend.”

And thoughtful Scott wrote a poem for Kady, his first girlfriend in six years.

He said: “When my journey on Love Island began, I didn’t know what to expect.

‘I’ll never meet a girl in there’ I’d say, ‘How much do you wanna bet?’ But oh how wrong could I be.

“Everything changed when I met this absolute worldie called Kady.

“It’s not been an easy ride, and we’ve had our tests,

“We’ve argued like crazy and I’ve quickly learnt that Kady always knows best.

“I wouldn’t change my time with her for the world; she really is one very special girl.

“It was a massive thing for me to make her my girlfriend.

“I know this poem was a little bit soppy, so don’t mock it,

“Kady pack your bags and get to Manchester, my little pocket rocket.”

Scott

There is no denying that this has been the funniest and most exciting series of Love Island yet - topped off by the cringeworthy but thrilling moment ‘cheat’ Terry Walsh was confronted by his now ex-girlfriend Malin Andersson after he shamelessly coupled-up with newcomer Emma-Jane Woodham.

Also in the running to win were Adam Maxted and Katie Salmon.

Olivia and Alex

The show’s sweethearts Nathan and Cara had been together from the very first coupling session in the villa, and no-one else managed to turn their heads.

They only had two rows - and one night apart - throughout the six weeks in Love Island and it looks likely that their relationship will last the distance.

Nathan even has the same shorts as Cara’s dad and Cara has already hinted at getting married in the place where they enjoyed a date.
