A Stockport-based theatre company’s pantomime has been named the best in the north west.

Stage Squad, which is based at Vernon Mill in Reddish, beat more than 230 other theatre companies to see their panto, an interpretation of Disney’s Frozen called ‘Defrosted’, named best in the region by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA).

The group, which was launched 11 years ago, became the first adult show ever to win the best panto category.

Squad leader Sean Kennedy writes and produces all the group’s material, which includes both adult and family pantomimes.

The group has performed shows at venues including Altrincham Little Theatre, and adult comedy cabaret shows at the Hough End Centre in Chorlton.

Sean said: “We never expected to win as our shows are our own and therefore very different from most am-dram productions so it is a huge accolade that we have been chosen.

“I may write and produce the shows but it’s the group members who bring my madness to life so it’s very much a team effort.

“We are always looking to expand our membership and would welcome any fresh talent from the Stockport area - our only prerequisite is that you share the same sense of humour and can laugh at yourself - loudly.”

Sean recently secured a unit at Vernon Mill and has created a purpose built space for rehearsals, recording and stage and costume construction, all of which will hopefully be available for hire to other creative groups later this year.

The Squad are also putting plans into place to start up their own youth group and aspire to perform shows at the Plaza, where Sean also works as a technician.

He added: “The squad have started working on big plans for the future and laying roots in Stockport seems to have been the catalyst in this. We hope the community will welcome us and help us sustain our recent success by getting involved, renting our space or supporting the shows.”

Sean is also currently trying to coordinate a Victoria Wood tribute comedy sketch show for charity and to feature input from all of NODAs Manchester theatre groups.
