The M.E.N can reveal the first M60 and M62 closures to take place this week - and they come with journey delay warnings of up to 30 minutes.

We reported yesterday how sections of the motorways will close during most week nights, mostly from 10pm and 6am, over the next 11 months.

And over just the next three days, junctions will be closed, as well as links between the M60, M62 and M602.

This week, affected areas include Bury, Salford, Trafford, Heywood and Rochdale.

A Highways England spokeswoman said they could not release details of the whole 11-month schedule yet because it may change due to weather conditions.

Instead, it will be fed out in week-by-week updates.

The closures will allow engineers to upgrade 56 gantries on the 17-mile smart motorway route between junction 8 of the M60 near Sale and junction 20 of the M62 near Rochdale.

The work will make way for electronic signs to be fitted - part of a bid to reduce congestion and journey times.

The first closure is already in place and will last from Tuesday, June 14, to the following Tuesday, excluding Saturday and Sunday night, on the eastbound M62 between junction 18 at the M60/Simister Island and junction 19 at Heywood.

From tonight,(WED) further sections are due to be closed.

Drivers are asked to follow clearly-signed diversion routes.

Stef Wilson, Highways England project manager, said: “We need to close sections of the motorway overnight for the next 11 months for the latest phase of the project to upgrade 56 overhead gantries. We’re carrying out the work when the motorway is at its quietest, and are encouraging drivers to consider using alternative routes or allow extra time for their journeys.

“Over 180,000 drivers travel along this stretch of the M60 and M62 every day, making it one of the busiest routes in the country. The new smart motorway will use variable speed limits to help tackle the stop-start conditions many of us have experienced in the past and an extra lane will be created on a 5-mile stretch of the M6.
