A mum who gave birth to her daughter on what would have been her late dad’s birthday is taking part in the Manchester Midnight Walk in his memory.

Rachel Livesey and her family are taking part in the St Ann’s Hospice event in honour of her dad Michael, a refuse collector from Reddish.

Michael died in June 2011, less than a year after he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer.

His granddaughter Leilah Slater was born on July 23 last year - on what would have been his 58th birthday.

Rachel, mum Lorraine, brother Anthony and auntie Dawn Wheeler take part in the 10k walk every year to raise funds for the hospice in Heald Green, Stockport , where Michael was a patient.

Rachel, who lives in Hyde, said: “Unfortunately, my dad didn’t live long enough to become a grandfather.

“He adored children and I was always a daddy’s girl. I was 11 days overdue and it’s amazing that Leilah was born on his birthday.

“The Midnight Walk is an excuse for the family to get together and there’s always a terrific fun atmosphere.”

The Walk is celebrating its 10th year and is again expected to attract more than 2,000 entrants. It leaves Manchester Central at midnight, with a musical and entertainment warm up there from 9pm.

The flat route includes landmarks such as the Hilton Hotel, old Granada Studios, Spinningfields, Manchester Arena, the Northern Quarter and the universities before returning to Manchester Central.

Entry is £20; £15 for past walkers and £10 if aged 11 to 17. To register go to mmwalk.org.uk or call the St Ann’s fundraising team on 0161 498 3631.

The registration fee covers running costs but does not contribute towards sponsorship so walkers are urged to raise as much as possible for St Ann’s Hospice.
