Emergency services were called to a fire alert at a Stockport restaurant - when the sparkler on a birthday cake set off the smoke alarm.

Firefighters were called to Gusto, on Station Road, Cheadle Hulme , on Thursday evening.

The large sparkler had given off enough smoke to trigger the alarm, which meant crews were automatically sent to the Italian restaurant shortly before 8.30pm.

Workers at the restaurant had rung the fire service to report there was no actual fire but it was too late to stop the call out.

Staff also reset the alarm system and firefighters from Cheadle station checked it over before leaving.

No one was evacuated from the restaurant and the birthday meal was able to continue.

Crew manager David Steele, from Stockport fire station, said: “The sparkler must have given a fair bit of smoke off as it triggered the alarm.

“Staff rang our contact centre to say there was no fire but procedures were already in place. They had reset the alarm and we made sure it was done properly before leaving.”

It’s not the first time celebratory objects have caused work for firefighters. In February a showing of the film Grease was halted at Stockport Plaza .

The alarm system was changed to allow hundreds of party poppers to be fired without setting it off. But the work itself caused the alarm to be triggered.
