More than a century of tradition will continue later this month as Stockport Carnival day takes place, with thousands expected to line the streets.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, July 23, with a parade beginning at Belmont Way, Heaton Norris , and ending at Woodbank Park, Offerton , where there will be a fun day.

Floats and walking groups will set off from Belmont Way at 1pm and travel down the A6 before cutting across Edward Street, Waterloo Road and Spring Gardens to arrive at the park for around 2pm.

The event at Woodbank Park, off Turncroft Lane, will have a fun fair, music and dance, demonstrations and plenty of stalls selling food, drink and crafts.

And there will also be a giant car boot sale from 9am with people welcome to turn up on the day for a pitch.

Luba Brown, from the organising committee, said: “It’s a riot of sound and colour with brightly decorated floats, fabulous costumed walking groups and the vibrant rhythms of the marching bands.

“It’s a great way to let people know about your community group or business, so why not take part?”

Collections on the day raise thousands of pounds for local charities.

The committee wants to hear from other people interested in joining .

Members are particularly keen for younger people to get involved to help with more ‘tech savvy’ tasks such as promoting the event through social media.

As well as regular attractions, this year it is hoped there will be additional ones including a petting zoo, dog training and donkey rides.

Luba added: “We want the carnival to go on for many years and want people who are really able to get stuck in and bring fresh ideas.

“The people of Stockport need to pull together and get behind the carnival to show what we can do.”

Stockport Carnival has been run for 111 years but was almost scrapped two years ago because of the rise of the event’s costs, increased red tape and a lack of committee members.

But an influx of new blood and help with admin tasks saved the day.
