Police are investigating a string of arson attacks after cars and buildings were deliberately torched.

During one incident a gas main caught alight on Kay Street, Bury, which police said could have been potentially fatal.

Officers are now linking three separate incidents dating back to March and are asking for any witnesses to come forward.

The most recent attack took place on Wednesday, April 27, when a pile of tyres were set on fire outside a property on Kay Street at 4.50am.

It caused damage to a building as well as the gas main.

Police have established three to four youths, possibly with a dog, were seen to start the blaze and run away along Bridge Street.

This incident is being linked to another incident on the same street when three vehicles were set alight on Monday March 28, at about 3.15am.

Another vehicle was pushed and set on fire around the same time the next day on Tuesday, March 29.

Police said three white youths were reportedly seen in the area at the time of these fires.

Officers also received a report of a parked car on fire along John Street at 6am on Sunday, March 27.

This is also being linked to the other three incidents.

DC Alsion Kay, for GMP’s Bury division, said: “Any arson attack can be incredibly dangerous but the fire by the gas mains could have been potentially fatal.

“We are lucky more damage wasn’t caused and no one was injured.

“All of these fires have been mindless acts by offenders who clearly have no respect for the community’s safety or property.

“I would urge anyone who might have seen anything in the area at the time of the offences to please call police.”
