A staggering two hundred speeding motorists were caught in a 30mph zone in just two hours - including one motorist clocked doing 93mph.

The motorists, who were caught by speed trap van on Oldham Road in Miles Platting, Manchester, on Sunday afternoon will now get notice of prosecution from officers.

And traffic officers slammed the driver of the car clocked doing three times the limit - a white BMW - saying the motorist put ‘innocent lives at risk’ and is now facing a lengthy ban.

The white BMW was captured by the speed van as it raced away from Manchester city centre down Oldham Road close to the junction with Butler Street.

It is thought the driver is actually braking and their speed earlier topped 100mph.

A photo tweeted by the force shows the vehicle at 12.28pm.

A traffic officer said: “Considering the car looks to be braking it is estimated that it could’ve been travelling in excess of 100mph on what is a 30mph road.

“Travelling at these break-neck speeds is extremely dangerous and the driver has put innocent members of the public in grave danger. There’s no question that if there had been a road traffic collision at such speeds, we’d be looking at fatalities. This needless to say has a devastating effect not just on those involved but family and friends alike.”

Three other cars which followed in a “convoy-like” manner were also clocked by the speed van, the last of which was doing 67mph.

The van was parked at the junction of Oldham Road and Butler Street from 11.57am until 2.20pm and caught a total of 224 drivers doing in excess of the speed limit.

Jack Kushner, spokesperson for Brake, the road safety charity, said: “It is absolutely shocking to hear of so many drivers reaching such excessive speeds in Manchester. Speeding drivers kill and cause serious injuries on our roads, destroying families and tearing communities apart, so we welcome this crackdown on speeding from Greater Manchester Police.

“Brake has just launched its Roads to Justice campaign, calling for tougher sentences for drivers who kill or maim on our roads, through reckless actions such as speeding. Speeding drivers knowingly endanger the lives of themselves and everyone around them, and risk causing appalling suffering. Speed limits exist to keep people safe; it’s vital that drivers abide by them.”
