Many Greater Manchester politicians may be down in the dumps following the UK’s decision to ditch the EU, but others are delighted.

Leave campaigners are looking to the future with optimism after hailing Britain’s ‘independence day’ .

So why do they think we should be positive about Brexit?

- We will be able to make our own laws, free from the EU.

- We will be able to set our own taxes.

- The UK will be able to control its own borders.

- Britain will once again truly choose who governs us - and throw them out.

- We will hand on to our children a tradition of democracy and liberty unrivalled in the world.

- Britain refused to be bullied. This was a great democratic decision in which people stood firm for a better future.

- The people this country make it the success it is. We should have the confidence in our abilities to succeed and thrive in the world.

- Our politics will become more accountable. With powers repatriated to this country from the EU, your elected representatives will make all the laws. They can be voted in and booted out, unlike elements of the EU.

- We will be able to spend our net contribution of £10bn to the EU on our own priorities.

- We will be able to shape an immigration policy that is fair and controlled.

- We will have the ability to forge our own trade links with the world, rather than relying on the EU to negotiate them on our behalf.

- Far from being ‘little Englanders’ we are stepping away from a failed political union and stepping forth as citizens of the world.

- Britain will regain control of our laws, that our democratically-elected politicians decide upon, rather than unelected figures in Brussels.

- We will be able to make our own trade deals and regain our seat on the World Trade Organisation, making deals with growing economies outside the EU.

- The UK will be able to control its own borders and treat people across the world equally, rather than giving EU citizens preference.

- Greater Manchester companies will benefit from being free from EU regulations and be able to grow.

- The markets, by nature, will be volatile. But it will pass.

- People in Greater Manchester penalised will benefit from fairer immigration.
