Former Oasis star Noel Gallagher paid tribute to his friend Caroline Aherne during a gig in the US - dedicating a moving rendition of Half the World Away to the late comedy icon.

The High Flying Birds frontman promised he would sing for Caroline while on tour in America, following her tragic death on Saturday.

He had only been made aware the 52-year-old had passed away hours before going on stage in Nashville.

There was never any question about which tune Noel would dedicate to Caroline, with a capacity 2,400 crowd at the famous Ryman Auditorium singing along to Half the World Away - the theme to The Royle Family.

Noel, who grew up in Burnage with brother Liam, just a few miles from Caroline’s childhood home in Wythenshawe, told the crowd: “I want to dedicate the next song to a friend of mine who died this afternoon.

“Her name was Caroline and she was a very, very, very funny woman.

“She used this next song on a very, very, very, very brilliant sitcom in England called The Royle Family.”

Pointing to the heavens, he then looked up and said: “So, wherever you are.”

After performing an emotional version of the Oasis favourite, Noel, 49, pointed to the heavens again.

Earlier on Saturday he had posted a picture of Caroline on his Instagram account.

“RIP Kaz... I shall sing for you tonight. (My god you made us laugh!),” he wrote.

Concert goer Aimee Breeden said: “It was just so moving.

“We all knew how emotional the concert was going to be and there were a few in tears when he sung.”

When Noel was contacted about the use Half the World Away for the opening credits of The Royle Family, he was reportedly on tour.

Due to a bad phone line, he thought Britain’s Royal Family were asking for permission to use the song for a documentary.

He was famously offered a part in the sitcom, but had to turn it down due to work commitments.

Caroline and Noel were often pictured out partying together in the 1990s and early 2000s and stayed good friends.
