A Netto store has become a magnet for bargain hunters ... after reports it is being used to flog off the soon-to-close chain’s stock.

Scores of shoppers queued up outside the Netto store in Glossop on Monday morning like it was the end of the world... but in reality they were just trying to cash in on bargain basement prices.

The Danish bargain store, which is owned in the UK by Sainsbury’s, announced plans to close down last week.

All 16 of its stores are set to shut in August, with the potential loss of 400 jobs.

And yesterday, a horde of shoppers queued outside to literally clear the shelves of the store.

Shoppers even reported scuffles and arguments breaking out as customers battled to get their hands on cut-price products.

Mum-of-two Kira Graham, 30, from Glossop, said there were reports on social media that the Glossop store was being used as a regional centre to offload spare stock.

Kira, who runs her own clothes firm, said she had lined up on Monday morning to catch a few bargains but was stunned to see the huge queue forming outside.

She told the M.E.N: “A couple of people had commented on Facebook that they were doing a big sale and that the Glossop store was being used as an outlet.

“But I was stunned when I got there. It ended up in a huge queue. I couldn’t believe it.

“I filled up my trolley for £24. I wanted to get some things for my boys and I thought ‘why not’.

“Most of it was good natured. People were just standing out in the rain and queuing to get in. But I did see some people who were taking it too far.

“People have been throwing toilet rolls at each other and one woman had her foot run over. Things were literally being cleared off the shelves and I heard there were a few scuffles between people.”

“Because it is the first week of the discounts, I think people are just trying to get as much as they can.”

The store’s normal opening weekday hours are 8am to 9pm - but, according to information posted on social media, the store is now only operating between 10am and 4pm each day in order to re-stock the shelves.

The store is on Brookfield Road, just off the A57, and next to Glossop Caravans site.

The M.E.N has contacted Netto’s head office for comment.

Derbyshire Police said they had not received reports about any bust-ups at the store.

Mike Coupe, chief executive of Sainsbury’s, revealed plans to wind down the store last week after admitting that Netto had failed to keep pace with rapidly-expanding rivals such as Lidl and Aldi.
