The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University have been named among the best in the UK for student nightlife.

Both institutions were listed in the top ten for bars, clubs and pubs following a study conducted by Which?.

The University of Manchester was ranked the sixth best in the UK for partying the night away, while Manchester Metropolitan came ninth.

Students who were interviewed said they loved the ‘hundreds of pubs’ plus venues like Sound Control, Matt and Phred’s, Satan’s Hollow and the uni’s Pangaea festival.

Researchers found northern institutions were the most popular among undergraduates for clubbing.

Northumbria University in Newcastle was named the best for nightlife overall, with Newcastle University coming second.

The London School of Economics and the University of Bristol were the only southern universities to make the list.

Students seeking political and artistic scenes might want to head further south.

Falmouth University in Cornwall and SOAS University of London were ranked more highly for politics and arts, with no northern universities making the top five.

The best ‘all-rounder’ universities, scoring highly across all categories, include the University of East Anglia, the University of Leeds and the University of Sheffield.

Students participating in the study recommended freshers at the University of Manchester to purchase a wristband to get into bars on Deansgate Locks, Printworks and the university's own music event Pangaea.

One participant said: “London’s nightlife LGBT scene is now going underground, but the LGBT scene in Manchester is thriving.”

Another student said: “There is something for everyone in Manchester. Excellent range of nightclubs, ranging from Sound Control, to Matt and Phred’s, to Satan’s Hollow and many more.

"Hundreds of pubs. Manchester Academy and O2 Manchester are good music venues. Several comedy clubs, with lots of pubs holding comedy nights.”

Which? Director of Campaigns and Policy, Alex Neill, said: “There are many factors to consider when deciding where to go to university, so hearing how current students rate their university, on everything from nightlife to the political scene, can be really useful. It’s always worth taking some time to consider all the options and do some research into what each university offers you before you make your decision.”
