A man has been seriously injured after being chased by a car and slashed with a meat cleaver in Wythenshawe .

Witnesses said they saw a red Volkswagon Golf crashing into a gate post on Cornishway, Woodhouse Park , at 11.20am on Tuesday morning.

The car was being followed by a black BMW.

A group of men got out of the BMW and attacked a passenger inside the Golf with a meat cleaver.

The attackers then got back into their car and drove off at speed.

Greater Manchester Police said the victim has been left with serious injuries and are now appealing for further witnesses.

Two houses on the street are were surrounded by police tape.

Police and forensics were also in attendance at an address on nearby Kingsgate Road.

One witness, who wished to remain anonymous, told the M.E.N a car appeared to be chasing a man.

She said the red Golf was chased by the BMW before it came to a stop and a passenger got out. The BMW then stopped and a group got out and attacked the man with the meat cleaver.

The attack took place close to a phone box on Cornishway before the group got back in their car and sped off.

It is understood the driver of the Golf helped the passenger back into the car and drove to nearby Kingsgate Road.

The witness said: “It was all pretty terrifying.

"I had my baby with me so I was scared they might ram into my car or my house.”

Detective Inspector Tony Lea from GMP’s South Manchester Neighbourhood Team said: “This is a baffling incident and we are keen to work out exactly what happened and what lead to this vicious attack.

“We are keen to identify the black BMW and the occupants so we are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward. We would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen the red Golf before the incident.

“It is shocking that such an attack could happen in broad daylight. I’m sure someone will have seen the two vehicles before the attack.

“The man is now being treated in hospital for his injuries, I hope he can go on to make a full recovery.”
