Labour's open war

The Labour party erupted into open warfare today as half the front bench walked out in a full-scale coup against Jeremy Corbyn.

Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell was among a wave of shadow ministers to quit in the wake of Britain’s vote to leave Europe.

But the Labour leader, late this evening, remained defiant - insisting he would fight any attempt to oust him.

Osborne statement due in the morning

Chancellor George Osborne will make an early morning statement in a bid to calm the money markets on Monday after the EU referendum ended up in a Brexit vote.

Man held over stabbing attack

A man has been arrested suspicion of stabbing Leevon Birchall up to 20 times. The 23-year-old was stabbed during a street attack at the junction of Citrus Way and Mango Place in Salford on Thursday, June 23.

M6 lane closure

The outside lane of the M6 in both directions is due to remain closed at Junction 21 (Woolston) until later tonight after a lorry crash this morning. There’s congestion a short way to the Lymm (northbound) and Croft (southbound) interchanges. Traffic is coping well.

Another resignation

Underground river revealed for first time

People in Rochdale now have a river running through the town centre after work to reveal the river was completed. Have a look at it all here.

Police proving they've got the moves

Police showed they’re getting in the spirit of carnival by doing the Cha Cha Slide this afternoon in Prestwich. They were taking lessons from a local dancing troupe - and this video shows they’ve nailed it... well, almost! Take a look at it here!

M6 all clear

On the M6 all lanes are now open again and traffic is easing after the completion of emergency repairs following the earlier lorry crash at J21 (A57 / B5210 (Woolston)).

Woman arrested after Stockport stabbing

A man is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed in the chest in Stockport . Police say a 29-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the attack which happened just after 2am on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to an address on Middlesex Road in Brinnington to reports of an assault. When they arrived they discovered the 29-year-old victim unconscious with a stab wound to the chest.

M6 chaos after lorry crash

The M6 was brought to a standstill after a Warburtons lorry smashed through the central reservation near Birchwood.

The collision happened just after 10.30am this morning on the northbound carriageway close to Junction 21 for Woolston.

It’s believed to have involved a Ford Focus towing a caravan, as well as the bright orange wagon.

BREAKING: Murder probe in Ancoats

A murder investigation has been launched after a man died following a fight in Ancoats.

Police and paramedics were called to the Victoria Square sheltered housing complex at around 7.30pm on Saturday night.

It’s understood two men – aged 50 and 70 – were involved in an altercation, and that one later died.

The floods - six months on

Six months ago today the lives of hundreds of families across Greater Manchester were turned upside down. When the River Irwell broke its banks on Boxing Day residents in Rochdale, Bury, Manchester, Salford and Radcliffe watched in horror as swirling water brought sewage and foul debris into their homes. Kitchens, cars, furniture, keepsakes - and Christmas presents - were lost. The average insurance claim for each house was £40,000.

Now, six months on and as life starts to return to normal, the M.E.N spoke to some of those who have battled adversity to get their homes back.

Brexit fallout - Corbyn facing mutiny

There continues to be huge political fallout from the Brexit vote, and this morning all the focus is on the Labour camp.

The pressure mounts on Jeremy Corbyn - following Hilary Benn’s sacking as shadow foreign secretary late last night, not shadow health secretary Heidi Alexander has announced her resignation from the shadow cabinet.

And it appears that many of her colleagues are about to follow suit:
