This nostalgic footage shows the amazing transformation of Manchester city centre in the past two decades.

Video clips taken from around the city in the late 80s and early 90s show landmarks as they were more than 20 years ago.

And one of the most incredible things about the recordings, which were shot by James Herring, from Crumpsall, are the amount of famous sights which don’t yet exist.

Shots of skylines show the conspicuous Beetham Tower missing from the horizon, while in one shot we see that Manchester Arena is not yet there.

At first we see the Manchester Cathedral end of Deansgate and the Arndale Centre before the Manchester bomb has caused a major rebuild, as well as Store street car park which now plays host to the Warehouse Project.

As the recording continues we also see Koffee Pot 2 sitting alongside a slew of now closed shops on Great Ancoats Street.

In another piece of footage the camera captures the promenade down from Piccadilly station down to the gardens – almost unrecognisable apart from The Brunswick pub.

The viewer is then taken around the back of Piccadilly, where the Whitworth Street car park and entrance now lies. But instead of an open space for taxis and arriving passengers is a building which formed part of Piccadilly’s depot.

And in the final minute we see the view from Cheetham Hill Road turning left onto New Bridge Street – with no Manchester Arena yet being built – and scenes showing the old Imperial Hotel and Pub, and London Road Fire Station.

Finance worker James, 53, took the footage in the late 80s and early 90s as a way to remember the city at the time. He also created the song which accompanies the film as well.

He said: “I really love the city and wanted to remember it how it was, so I went out and filmed all around Manchester and Salford really. It was filmed around 1988-89 and then again in 1992-93.

“It’s amazing what it shows because you see just how much everything has changed, with so much of it knocked down now and redeveloped.

“It’s the sort of thing I know I would like to watch if I saw it so I thought I would share it with the Manchester Evening News.”
