A major clear up operation is underway after large parts of Greater Manchester were battered by heavy rain and flood waters.

Fire crews were deployed to incidents across the region on Saturday after the torrential downpours caused landslides, road closures and train delays.

In one dramatic incident an elderly woman had to be rescued by firefighters using a WHEELIE BIN after getting stuck in floods on Bridge Lane in Bramhall , Stockport.

Northern Rail has warned that train services between Buxton and Hazel Grove will be suspended for several days after a landslide at Middlewood Station in Disley.

The worst affected areas included Bramhall, Marple, Offerton and Poynton, with residents and businesses left counting the cost.

Sarah and Matt Bickley, who have lived on Shearwater Road in Offerton for nearly 10 years, said they are ‘absolutely devastated’.

Mental health nurse Sarah, 37, said: “We didn’t know what to do in the situation. The kids were really distressed and crying their eyes out.

“The conservatory is brand new with underfloor heating and cost us £20,000 so that will all have to come up along with the kitchen.”

Father-of-four Howard Lambert, who also lives on the street, said they have ‘never had anything like it before’. He said: “It’s been horrendous really. The house is knackered. The water was up to your knees.”

Brook House Nursery in Poynton was hosting a first aid course for 13 staff when the flood water burst in.

Gill Forrest, who has run the nursery for 26 years, said: “I’ve never seen anything like it. It just moved so fast.

“At least it happened on a weekend and we didn’t have to evacuate any children. Local people and parents have been amazing.”

A number of road closures remain in place on Bramhall Lane South in Bramhall and Strines Road in Disley after flooding damaged bridges.

A Facebook page and online fundraising page has been set up by kind-hearted residents to raise funds for victims of the flooding in Hazel Grove, Bramhall, Offerton and Poynton.

The ‘Helping Hands for the June Floods’ page has already attracted nearly 2,000 members.
