Four people were injured after an elderly man drove the wrong way around the M60 for FIVE miles.

Dozens of terrified drivers were forced to swerve out of the way as they saw a red Ford Fiesta speeding towards them on the anti-clockwise carriageway on Monday evening.

GMP received multiple 999 calls alerting them to the emergency, after the car was spotted entering the motorway at junction three for Cheadle.

The Ford, which was said to be driven by a man in his 80s, later collided with three other vehicles near junction 8 at Carrington - some five miles away.

But incredibly, none of the four people injured including the pensioner suffered serious injuries.

Police say they received more than 20 calls from motorists and passengers.

A spokesman for GMP said some witnesses reported Ford Fiesta to be travelling at speeds of between 70-80mph, while others said it was more 40-50mph.

The crash happened around 6.45pm and is thought to have involved three other vehicles.

Traffic was stopped completely between the two junctions while police and paramedics were called to the scene.
