Greater Manchester Fire Service headquarters could be relocated to Bury.

A new £11m training and safety centre for the brigade is due to open in the town later this year.

The brigade has made videos of how the new Training and Safety Centre at the 10-acre site at Wellington Street will look.

But it could mean brigade HQ at Pendlebury also moving to the Bury site and the closure of another training complex in Cassidy Street, Ancoats , Manchester .

The old training centre is in a prime location and the brigade could cash in on its sale.

The Fire Authority was considering a proposal to move the headquarters on Monday.

The service, which is having to make cuts of £14.79m this year due to a reduction in government funding, may also view the closure and sale of the Pendlebury site as means of saving and generating money.

Gary Keary, FBU brigade secretary, said: “The plan is for a super centre at Bury –with the headquarters moving there too.

“Our concern regarding the closure of the Ancoats training centre is that it is next to Thompson Street fire station. Will management sell both sites – as that would be an attractive proposition for developers?

“We understand that the plans for the possible relocating of the headquarters to Bury are well advanced.”

A report on the planned move by County Fire Officer Peter O’Reilly, says: “Consideration is being given to the potential to combine our current headquarters and both the operational and classroom-based elements of our training and development centre in Manchester at our newly constructed training centre.

“Provisional work suggests there may be significant revenue savings to be realised by bringing together support and training facilities and delivering from one site.”

The report says about £500,000 needs to be spent on improving mechanical and electrical facilities at the current Pendlebury headquarters in the next three years.

It currently costs £830,000 a year to run the headquarters and the Manchester training and development centre.

The brigade has commissioned valuations of the Pendlebury site and Thompson Street to determine the potential capital receipt if they were to be sold.
