England could be disqualified from Euro 2016 if there is further trouble, UEFA have warned.

The UEFA Executive committee warned on Sunday afternoon that both England and Russia face sanctions if disorder continues.

The UEFA executive committee told the English Football Association and the Russian Football Union "it will not hesitate to impose additional sanctions...including the potential disqualification of their respective teams" from Euro 2016 should fan disorder continue.

It comes after ugly scenes marred the build up to the game over the past few days in Marseille, and clashes inside the Stade Velodrome yesterday. An England fan remains in critical condition in hospital following the violence.

England drew the game the 1-1 with Russia after an equaliser by the Russians seconds before full time. Tottenham's Eric Dier had put England ahead 15 minutes before the end.

UEFA was swift to open disciplinary proceedings against the Football Union of Russia for alleged crowd disturbances, racist behaviour and the setting off of fireworks towards the end of the game.

But now their executive committee has gone one step further in a strongly worded statement which indicates the governing body will not hesitate to impose the ultimate sanction.

The statement read: "The UEFA Executive Committee would like to express its disgust for the violent clashes which occurred in the city of Marseille.

"Such unacceptable behaviour by so-called supporters of the national teams of England and Russia has no place in football, a sport we must protect and defend.

"The UEFA Executive Committee has warned both football associations that - irrespective of any decisions taken by the independent disciplinary bodies relating to incidents inside the stadium - it will not hesitate to impose additional sanctions on the Football Association (FA) and the Russian Football Union (RFU), including the potential disqualification of their respective teams from the tournament, should such violence occur again.

"We urge both the FA and the RFU to appeal to their supporters to behave in a responsible and respectful manner.

"We would also like to publicly voice our support for the work of the French Authorities and security forces for their efforts to deliver a safe and secure tournament in challenging circumstances."

Recap: Game ends in a draw but match marred by stadium violence

In shocking scenes following the conclusion of the game between England and Russia, which ended in a stalemate, England fans appeared to be climbing fences get out of the way of the Russian supporters who were charging them.

Some reports claimed women and children were trampled by Russian supporters as they surged into the England section of the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

In addition to the confrontations between rival sets of fans, fireworks were also set off inside the stadium, raising questions about security as they should not have been allowed inside the ground.

Two large white flares were set off in the Russian end of the ground, while fireworks were also let off, with a large bang heard from behind the goal defended by England's Joe Hart.

Earlier French police used water cannon and tear gas on rioters as fist fights and bottle throwing broke out between rival supporters in Marseille's Old Port.
