A partially-sighted pensioner who was brutally attacked outside his front door by a thug who stole his wallet has relived his ordeal for a TV appeal.

Les Lightfoot, 68, walks with a white cane and had returned to his flat in Hulme when he was targeted by a man who followed him home from collecting a prescription at a chemist.

Les was punched about the head then fell down stairs within his flat complex on Yew Street, Hulme, after the incident, which took place at 7pm on April 4

The callous thug - who told Les not to fight him - rifled through his pockets and took his wallet. It contained only a small amount of cash and personal documents.

He was left with a badly bruised face and fractured his kneecap in the fall.

Les said he was ‘like a quivering jelly’ when he regained consciousness in hospital and was told what had happened to him.

Speaking to the BBC’s Crimewatch Roadshow, Les said: “I am much more aware of people around me now and everyone I see is a potential offender. It has made me quite fearful in that respect and as I get older, that is only going to get worse.”

Police are continuing to investigate and are appealing for witnesses. The attacker is described as Asian or mixed race, aged in his late 20s and around 5ft 6ins tall. He was wearing a blue tracksuit.

Det Con Louise Kelly said: “It was a horrific attack. We are appealing for anyone who may have information leading to the arrest of the person responsible to come forward.

“Les was violently assaulted in a place where he should feel completely safe.”
