Detectives have issued CCTV stills after a pensioner’s bank card was stolen from his home and used at a cashpoint almost 50 miles away.

Hundreds of pounds were taken from Arthur Carr’s account at the ATM outside Asda supermarket in Chadderton, Oldham.

Two hours earlier, the bank card and thousands of pounds more in cash were stolen from Arthur’s home in Merseyside. Realising he had been burgled, the 87-year-old got on his mobility scooter and searched the surrounding street for the offender, but could not find him.

Police are now searching for a man captured on security camera outside the Chadderton Asda. He is not believed to be the burglar, officers said.

Arthur first fell victim to the distraction burglary at his home on Highclere Crescent, in Huyton, at 2pm on April 18.

A man claiming to be from the water board turned up at his front door and told the pensioner that he needed to carry out essential maintenance on the drains. He tricked his way into Arthur’s home by saying he needed to check the water in the bathroom.

He then searched the property and found a small metal box containing several thousand pounds in cash and the bank card.

The offender was described as white, aged in his 20s, of medium build with short dark hair, dark clothing and wearing a baseball cap. He wore an ID card around his neck which was turned to face his chest.

Less than two hours later, at 3.58pm, the card was used at an Asda supermarket ATM in Chadderton.

The offender used the stolen card to withdraw hundreds of pounds in cash before leaving the area and walking away along Wellington Street onto Burnley Street.

Police say the man in the CCTV is not the man believed to have committed the burglary, however detectives want to speak to him in connection with the incident.

The victim made a heartfelt plea to the public to help the police track down the people responsible for stealing from him.

Speaking on the BBC’s Crimewatch Roadshow, Arthur said the bogus worker crept into his bedroom and took the box while his back was turned.

He said: “He must have moved really quick, he was very, very quick.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Knowsley CID on 0151 777 6561 or 0151 777 6562, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
