Boris Johnson will be in charge of Britain’s relationships with the rest of the world, as part of new PM Theresa May’s immediate cabinet reshuffle.

The former London Mayor is now in the cabinet as Foreign Secretary - a role which will see him responsible for MI6 and spy agency GCHQ - while former Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond becomes Chancellor of the Exchequer.

George Osborne resigned from the Number 11 role just minutes before news of Ms May’s appointments came in.

Mr Hammond has been a loyal backer of Ms May throughout her campaign to succeed David Cameron, who stood down from office this afternoon.

MP Amber Rudd will become the new Home Secretary, replacing Ms May, running Britain’s counter-terrorism efforts, police forces, and immigration policies.

The former investment banker, venture capitalist, and financial journalist, 52, decided to enter politics in her 40s in order to get “a grip on her life”.

David Davis will become Secretary of State for Brexit - leading the country’s negotiations with the EU - and Michael Fallon is to stay on as Defence Secretary.

Liam Fox, a former minister who was forced to resign after controversy surrounding his friendship with a businessman who accompanied him on some formal trips, has been brought back to frontline politics in the role of secretary of state for international trade, a new department.

The flurry of appointments came within hours of Mrs May taking office.

In a speech in Downing Street, Britain’s second female Prime Minister said that the decisions of her administration would be driven not by the interests of “the privileged few” but those of voters struggling with the pressures of modern life.

“I know you are working around the clock, I know you are doing your best and I know that sometimes life can be a struggle,” she told voters.

“The Government I lead will be driven not by the interests of the privileged few but by yours. We will do everything we can to give you more control over your lives.”
